Laughing With, Not At: Humor That Connects in Dementia Care

Cartoon owl giggling with its wing covering its beak. Beige and pink tones. Text above: Caregiver Laugh Lab. Playful mood.

Dementia can be unpredictable, challenging, and even heartbreaking. But in the midst of it all, laughter still finds a way in. Not as a distraction or escape—but as a way to connect, cope, and carry on together.

🧠 Why Humor Matters

Humor in dementia care isn’t about laughing at the person. It’s about finding joy with them. Gentle, shared moments of levity can:

  • Diffuse a tense or frustrating situation

  • Strengthen the emotional bond between caregiver and loved one

  • Provide a sense of dignity, agency, and presence

Sometimes, the best medicine isn’t a pill—it’s a giggle you didn’t see coming.

💡 Try This: Everyday Humor That Connects

  • Go with the moment: A caregiver told us her husband started speaking in pirate voices during meals. Instead of correcting him, she joined in. Now, they "set sail" together every lunchtime.

  • Use silly props: A funny hat, oversized sunglasses, or even a pair of socks on your hands can turn a hard moment into a lighthearted one.

  • React with curiosity, not correction: If your loved one says something surprising, try saying, "Tell me more!" instead of correcting the statement. Sometimes the rabbit hole leads to a smile.

💡 Caregiver Reflection

  • Have you ever had a moment of shared laughter that made a tough day easier?

  • What brings your loved one joy—silly songs, funny voices, knock-knock jokes?

  • How could humor help you both breathe a little easier today?

Shared laughter brings both people into the present—even if just for a moment. And in dementia care, moments matter.
